NovaModel vs the AP Poll

When our prediction engine and the AP Top 25 disagree about which team is better, one of them is wrong. Every one of those games from the 2025 season, graded by who actually won.

Share

The answer · 235 regular-season games, the 2025 season

When the prediction engine and the AP Top 25 disagreed about which team was better, the engine was right 20 times and the AP 7: 74.1% for the engine.

If the two were equally good at picking winners, a split at least this lopsided would happen about 2% of the time (p = 0.019). That's unlikely to be luck.

This season played no part in choosing the engine's settings, so it's a genuine test, not a measure of how well the engine was fit.

Which NovaModel this is

Everything on this page grades the prediction engine: the model behind NovaKingSports' premium game predictions, built to forecast who wins the next game. It is not the model behind the rankings on the home page and the rankings page. Those use a résumé-adjusted model, which rewards what a team has already done - its wins, and who they came against - more than how it projects going forward. The two usually agree, but not always, so a team's spot in the displayed rankings can differ from how the prediction engine rates it.

More on both: how team ratings work.

Early season vs late

Early on, the engine's ratings rest on two or three games per team, while the poll starts from a preseason view of each team. Early disagreements partly measure who had the better head start.

Ranked vs ranked, ranked vs unranked

When both teams are in the Top 25, a disagreement is an argument about order. When only one is, it means the engine backed the team the AP left unranked.

How it's graded

  • In every regular-season game, the AP "picks" the better-ranked team (a ranked team over an unranked one), and the engine picks the team it rates higher. Games with neither team in the Top 25 are left out: the poll has no opinion on them.
  • Both use their rankings from entering that week, so neither had seen the result it's graded on.
  • Games where they agree count toward each side's accuracy but can't separate them. The head-to-head is only the games where they disagreed.
  • The 95% range on the engine's share is a Wilson interval. The p-value is an exact two-sided binomial test against an even split. Ties and unplayed games are left out.
