How NovaKing's College Football Rankings Work

A walkthrough of what the model is actually trying to do: evaluate teams on what happens on the field instead of reputation, preseason expectations, or conference name. The rating measures how a team performs relative to what its opponents typically allow, then adjusts recursively across the entire FBS until the numbers stabilize.

  • No preseason poll and no reputation input — every season starts from zero information
  • The same stat line is worth more against a defense that usually shuts teams down
  • Ratings are solved across all of FBS at once, not team by team

I Built an Objective College Football Ranking System... It Put James Madison #2

The model's first public test returned James Madison at #2, and the video uses that to ask the harder question: was JMU really that good, or does an outlier like this expose how difficult it is to compare 130+ teams whose schedules barely overlap?

  • Most teams share almost no common opponents, which is the core ranking problem
  • Conference and scheduling differences distort any naive comparison
  • An outlier is a stress test of the method, not automatically a failure of it
